Catherine Thurman

My name is Catherine Thurman, and I'm 42 years old.  I met Jolene in Feb. 2003, and we've been friends ever since!  In order to understand all that she's done for me though I have to give you a little history first....

When we met, I'd been through a painful & humiliating divorce AND had given birth to my first son Michael just 7 months earlier.  Needless to say, I was out of shape, sleep-deprived, depressed & had lost any self-confidence I'd ever had before.  A friend of mine suggested that we get a trainer together.  I'd had several other trainers over the years & had learned the hard way that if a person can't motivate themselves to stay in shape, then they certainly won't be able to motivate me!  With that in mind, I told my friend that I'd only seen ONE trainer at the gym that I would even consider using because she was the only one who looked absolutely amazing & actually looked like she practiced what she preached.  I don't know about you, but I think that a trainer should look like a TRAINER!  Of course this person was Jolene.

My friend & I ended up each buying sessions with her & quickly found out why she looked so incredible - she knows what she's doing & she practices it in her own life every day.  She's brutally honest & told us right up front that we
could bust our butts & work out every single day including hours of cardio, but that if we didn't clean up our diets & eat right, we'd never see the results.

After learning a bit about my diet & everything I was doing wrong, I listened to Jolene & started to change my habits.  She also told me about figure competitions & that she could train me to compete if I was interested.  I did a little research, checked out what these ladies looked like & thought that training for a competition might just give me the extra motivation I needed to reclaim my old self-confidence.... so, around May or June we started to work getting me ready for my very first figure competition.  She also recommended that I see a nutritionist (Keith Klein) for my diet, so I did that as well, and he was amazing too!  I had no idea how scientific & specific the diet needed to be in order to get to certain levels.... wow, what an education!  I went from about 25% body fat & weighing around 127 to 10% body fat & weighing around 112 in a matter of months!

I competed in the John Sherman show here in Houston in Nov. 2003 & placed 4th in Class A Figure (against the younger girls) & 2nd in Masters Figure (Masters is anyone over 35 years old).  I was absolutely thrilled, and had managed to not only get in the best shape of my life, but get my old self-confidence back.

I've continued to train with Jolene through the years because she keeps me motivated & accountable.  I've noticed that when I "take a break" from training with her thinking I'll do it on my own, I tend to gain back weight & get "fluffy" (that's a cute word for it anyway, but it doesn't LOOK so cute).

I got remarried in 2008 & managed to get pregnant within 4 months.  My husband & I were shocked to find out that we were having TWINS!!!!!  Yes, 2 babies in my 41 year old belly........ the word HUGE doesn't even begin to describe how big I was.  I have pictures to prove it, and I'm sure my husband Eric wondered every day in those last few months if he'd ever see the body he married again - honestly, I wondered the same thing.....

Jackson & Parker were born on Mar. 19, 2009 & I started Jolene's boot camp 2 months later in May.  I was so ready to lose the baby weight!!!  I managed to get back to pre-baby weight within a few months, but still wasn't where I really wanted to be.  I thought that having some sort of fitness goal would help, so some friends of mine & I decided in Jan. of this year that we'd try training for a marathon...... well, that just didn't motivate me to eat right again.

Jolene mentioned in March that there are now bikini competitions not just figure, so again I did my research......  I didn't want to get as muscular as I had previously or have to get as lean for the competition - partially because I simply don't have as much time to train anymore, and mostly because I want something I can maintain more easily.  With Jolene's boot camp & some extra training on Tuesdays & Thursdays as well as her diet expertise, I started getting ready again - I was about 25% body fat at that point & weighed about 128.

I competed in the Branch Warren Classic in Spring on July 10.  I was about 15% body fat & weighed 113 the day of the show. I look better & feel better than I have in YEARS!  I love my body and plan to KEEP it!  As long as Jolene is doing her boot camps, I'll be there!  They've become the workouts that I love & enjoy - not to mention, the other women in the class are so much fun & make the time just fly by.

If you're serious about reaching your fitness goals, Jolene's the trainer for you - but be warned, she won't listen to excuses or whining, she only absolutely wants you to succeed!  I saw a t-shirt at the show that said, "You can have results or excuses, but not both..."  that describes Jolene's philosophy perfectly.

 Transformation Story by Susan Clark
I am so thankful and honored to share my experience on this blog. I have so much respect and admiration for personal trainer, Jolene Carter, that I hope my experience will inspire others to dare to learn from Jolene how to fulfill their own personal health and fitness goals.

My experience started when Jolene Carter announced she was beginning a six week boot camp in January 2009. I was a little scared, but I jumped on the opportunity to join. I originally met Jolene several years ago when one of my best friends began training with her to simply get in shape, but then became motivated to compete in figure competitions. I watched her body completely transform after several months of training, so I knew Jolene was excellent at her job with proven results. When I first began the boot camp, I was going to be turning 40 in a few months. I was the oldest, most out of shape person there with the motivation to simply "kick start" my New Year’s resolution of "getting back in shape". I’ve always been an active person and jogged at least 3 miles a few times a week, so I wasn’t overweight, but I was definitely not consistent with jogging and my body was not lean, muscular or tone at all. In fact, when she took my measurements, I weighed 131 lbs., the most I’ve ever weighed in my life, and my body fat was 29%. I had no idea I was that out of shape!

The boot camp was fun and motivating. The younger girls there were encouraging and inspiring. But it was TOUGH and I used muscles I hadn’t used in years and some that I’ve probably never used in my life! There were days that I could barely walk, but I grew to love that feeling because I knew the pain would pay off. I was thrilled when Jolene said she would begin another session after a week break and would continue to have 4 week sessions each month throughout the year. This became my workout regimen.

After 3 months, I had lost 13 lbs and 8% body fat. My arms and legs appeared more toned and my waistline was thinner. I felt so much healthier and stronger, and I became more motivated than ever with the vision of having a body like a figure competitor. In June, I approached Jolene about how I could make my body look more muscular and shapely. She suggested adding weight training, more cardio and following a lean diet plan. So I began weight training with her 2 days a week and she helped me with my diet plan. She gave me homework for cardio such as sprints and jogs and interval changes on the treadmill. I also began taking the Advocare supplements she recommended: the Daily Max-E Vitamins and Spark on a daily basis, Catalyst and Muscle Gain Protein Shake before workouts, and FiboTrim before cheat meals. After 10 weeks of 20 sessions, my arms, legs and ab muscles were so much more defined and pronounced and I had learned how to work-out with weights and eat lean. I joined a gym for the first time in my life and continued to follow my program. Today, I continue to maintain my goal weight of 115 lbs with body fat of 15%.

I love my new body and the way I feel. It keeps me motivated every day. I don’t ever have to say, "I need to go on a diet before this special event" or dread trying on bathing suits or how I will look at the beach or a pool. I have made new friends and have fun working out at boot camp 3 days a week, I love feeling like a bad ass lifting weights at the gym, and I love the food I eat. The supplements help me with my stamina, strength, and energy and Advocare offers other products that I have also incorporated such as the daily Probiotic Restore and the 10 day cleanse, both for digestive and intestinal health. It has truly been a life change for me and I am so grateful to know Jolene and all that she has helped me accomplish.

*Since Susan wrote this, she entered into the Branch Warren and won 3rd in Bikini! She easily maintains 10-12% bodyfat now. Pics below.      Jolene

Jolene "Supertrainer" Carter

Whenever people ask how I started competing I always tell them about my trainer: Jolene Carter. When I first met her in 2004 I thought, “Wow, she’s fit.” She was really nice, goal-oriented, and driven, but the best part was that she truly cared about me as a client. Jolene stayed lean and close to competition ready almost all the time…..and she wasn’t even competing anymore. (And people ask me how I am able to stay lean year round…LOL…go talk to Jolene). I nicknamed Jolene “Supertrainer” because it seemed as though she had an answer for all my workout questions…..and she was always right. I remember saying, “How do you know all that stuff?” And she said, “I’ve been doing this for a long time.” When prepping me for my first show she promised that if I did everything she said I would win…..I DID! She called and checked on my progress and

even yelled at me once in the gym when I was talking too long between sets…..and I wasn’t even training with her that day…LOL. The point is, the woman is not good at what she does, she is THE BEST!! Last weekend, after finding out that one of her clients won the overall title at a Houston figure competition, I joked with her in a message and asked, “Does everything you touch turn to gold?” Her expectations demand nothing but your best, which forces you to perform above and beyond what you believed you were capable of doing. I believe in thanking and giving credit to everyone who helped me get involved with competing and fitness altogether, for it was not me alone, but the support of those around me who helped me succeed……so thank you Jolene Carter. I truly appreciate all that you have done and love and miss you so much!

They say behind every good man, is a good woman. Well I say behind every good competitor is an exceptionally good trainer and that trainer is Jolene Carter

Growing up in a family of athletes and coaches, I was always aware of the hard work and dedication of sports performance. I was a high school multi sport standout and a collegiate track and field and cross country standout.

Following college I began teaching high school and eventually made my way to coaching track and cross country in '03. I maintained an adequate level of fitness, but not the same level at which a former collegiate athlete becomes accustomed. In May '04, after deciding to rejoin a gym, my membership included 5 free training sessions that I initially declined.

I remember thinking, "I'm a former athlete. I know what I'm doing in the gym. I don't need a trainer." After seeing the physiques produced by trainer Jolene Carter (www.jolenecarter.com), I agreed to sign up to train, and compete in my first figure competition. I'll never forget Jolene's words at our initial session:

"Are you going to listen to me?"

"Yes."

"Are you going to do everything that I tell you to do?"

"Yes."

"Good, then you'll win your show."

I guess Jolene was right. I went from 148lbs and 21% body fat to 128lbs and 6% body fat in 16 weeks, and won my first show (John Sherman Classic), which happens to be one of the biggest shows in Texas. I've been an avid competitor since.

Hello Everyone and Welcome~

First off I wanted to say I am so blessed and honored to have been asked to be a part of this blog. Among the other amazing athletes I feel like a baby among the group in the Fitness Industry with so much to look forward to and aim for in the future that I can only hope to accurately portray my enthusiasm for the sport through my blogs. This is my first time to ever blog so this is a learning experience for me and I want to share my experiences with those so that we can all inspire and motivate each other to continue to live clean healthy active lifestyles.

I began my quest a year ago walking through a store and seeing a spread of Jamie Eason in a magazine… I was blown away by her beauty and physique. She was very feminine yet had a very toned muscular look to her that I had never dreamed I could achieve. Just a few days after I had a friend request from someone on myspace and wouldn’t you know Jamie Eason’s profile was on their Top Friends… as silly as this story started out I sent Jamie a message just to tell her how blown away I was and that she had inspired me to begin getting in better shape for myself. I was never overweight but had no idea how to weight train and had always just done cardio and a few of the machines I was familiar with. I was surprised when she wrote me back and told me that her first trainer Jolene Carter was in my area of Houston. I contacted Jolene and signed up for her next bootcamp as a way to start my journey to being FIT. After seeing Jolene and being convinced by not only her and my Nutritionist Keith Klein (who Jamie had also seen years before) that I could achieve the body Jamie had and that I should think about competing in Figure. I had never heard of figure competitions or had any clue how to get ready for one but with their guidance I began in Feb training for my first show which was to be in Houston the FAME Lonestar. I continued to see results through my diet and weight training and that for first time in my life I had a six pack and could really see drastic changes happening to my body. I not only looked better on the outside but I felt better too. Always struggling with heartburn and acid reflux I was beginning to notice I was hardly even needing to take medicine anymore.

Two weeks before the FAME show I went in to see Keith and was at  6% body fat….he challenged me to compete later that week at the NPC Texas Shredder. I began posing just a few days before the show and got my suit the day before i left for my old college home…Austin, TX. I not only shocked my friends who came to see me but surprised myself as well with a 3rd place finish in Figure A at my first ever show just months after I had begun weight training. That was the beginning of an itch. Everyone loves to win and I was no different… Two weeks later I was up on stage again at the FAME Lonestar in Houston and placed 2nd in Fitness Model, 3rd in Bikini Open, and 3rd in Figure. I was then awarded The Most Outstanding Athlete “The Lonestar Award” at the end of the show. It was an amazing feeling to feel that way on stage with family and friends in my hometown and be up for one of the Overall Awards. I then vowed to take my training to an even higher level of dedication and motivation that would then carry me to the Europa Super Show Overall  win just two months later in Dallas, TX. My greatest victory to date in competition and hopefully only the beginning of an even more successful competition season in 2010. I will continue to push myself and my body to limits I never even dreamed of achieving just a year ago…Watch out Fitness Industry you’ve never seen this much determination and perseverance under 5 feet!! :)
